The successful candidate will work primarily in the study the optical and electronic properties of diamond color centers. In particular, he will investigate the diamond N and Si vacancies (NV, SiV). These color centers are characterized by long coherence times thanks to weak phonon scattering. Recently, this property has been used to perform single-molecule imaging with angstrom resolution using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Vacancy electron spin decoherence is caused mainly by interaction with paramagnetic impurities which can be placed in proximity of the diamond based sensor. 
The candidate will utilize this exceptional sensitivity of diamond color centers as a mean to detect tumor molecular fingerprints mirroring the abnormal cell activity or gene mutations, and then the evolution of the disease. Characterization of the optical and electronic properties will be carried out to evaluate the quality of the diamond samples. The candidate will also collaborate with biologists for the isolation/manipulation of the tumor markers. Then experiments devoted to the detection of the markers will be performed through diamond based magnetometry experiments. 
The work will be carried out in collaboration with prof. Antonella Motta  of the department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Trento and head of Cells and Tissue Dynamics Lab., BIOtech Research Center - Trento providing the needed support for the biomedical part (information at https://www.unitn.it/biotech/en/10/biotech website) of the research, and prof. Angelo Bifone – head of the Diamond Lab at the Center for Neuroscience and Cognitive Systems (CNCS) IIT Rovereto (TN) (information at https://cncs.iit.it/ website).

The ideal candidate should have:

•	PhD in physics, chemistry or materials science with the PhD thesis related to one of the following topics: quantum technologies, diamond based NV, SiV color centers, diamond based magnetometry,
•	Experience in optics and photonics,
•	Experience in quantum optics, precision quantum measurement and quantum metrology,
non-classical light sources and novel detectors, quantum imaging, quantum sensors,
•	Written and oral communication skills,
•	Good knowledge of written and spoken English,
•	Skills in leading, coordinating, and/or supervising the work of others,
•	Ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Additional requirements:

Candidates with a record of successful grant applications are preferred.

Type of contract: fixed term contract - full time  
Gross annual salary: about € 39.300,00
Start date: January 2019
End date: December 2021
Duration: 36 months
